Went to another great networking/pitch event last night here in NY for tech founders, which not unsurprisingly had 6 male founders…for all 6 pitching slots.
Shrugged off the blindsided typical all-male lineup and enjoyed the rest of the night, but found it really strange when the event host asked at the end of the event for leads for female founders to pitch at upcoming events because he was having difficulty finding them…I raised my hand not only because I am one, but because I had also applied to pitch for the same event that night. Another female founder and I both applied, actually.
Did I expect to be chosen to pitch just because I applied and I happen to be a female? Absolutely not. But — if the search seemed so difficult as conveyed by the event host to find female founders (in NY of all places?), I was scratching my head why they didn’t just ask me (as a female founder who applied) for any leads here in NY that I might have on other female founders…
So I go and speak to the event host at the close of the event and explain to him that there’s no shortage of female founders in NY, and he looks at me like i’m from outer space. He summarizes that they’re no where to be found.
  My reaction?
  Was basically this…

Please stop saying it’s hard to find female founders. Please. Just. Stop

Please stop saying it’s hard to find female founders. Please. Just. Stop
       Followed by this:

Please stop saying it’s hard to find female founders. Please. Just. Stop

Please stop saying it’s hard to find female founders. Please. Just. Stop
And after trying to help him understand — to which he continued to insist that its impossible to find female founders, I was left feeling like this:

Please stop saying it’s hard to find female founders. Please. Just. Stop

Please stop saying it’s hard to find female founders. Please. Just. Stop
Having said that, for anyone out there who still feels deep pain points in trying to find leads for a supposed needle in a haystack called a female founder, particularly here in NY, here’s some places you might have some luck:

  • WENYC: This is an initiative launched by the city of New York to support women entrepreneurship. They also have an actively engaged facebook group with 3,227 members in it. http://www.we.nyc
  • Dreamers // Doers : A high impact membership of trailblazing women in tech/startups/entrepreneurship with over 3000 women in their online community worldwide; and with their strongest engagement here in NYC where they are based. http://www.dreamersdoers.me
  • Women Who Tech : An organization with goals to break down barriers and get more women startups funded. They have an actively engaged Facebook Group with their women founders with currently 3027 members. http://womenwhotech.com/
  • Female Founders Conference : This is a Y Combinator community of female founders. The community is actively engaged through a Facebook group with currently 4,561 members (many of whom are NY based)    http://www.femalefoundersconference.org/
  • 2xinTech conference + online community : This is a women-tech conference in NY produced by Grand Central tech which had 1000 applicants, and maintains an actively engaged google-group community for the female founders involved. http://www.2xintech.com

  • Project entrepreneur : A competition and mentorship program for women entrepreneurs created by the founders of Rent The Runway, and based in NY: http://www.projectentrepreneur.org
  • Project Diane : A project created by digitalundivided.com that examined 60,000 startups regarding the growth of black female led startups: http://www.projectdiane.com/
  • Hire Tech Ladies: A digital community of 2000+ women worldwide in product, engineering, design, marketing, business development, ops and more. Yes this is a group for tech women seeking employment but i’m sure you’ll find plenty of female founder leads here as well http://www.hiretechladies.com
  • Lesbians Who Tech : The Community of Queer Women in And Around Tech (and the people who love them) with over 11,000 queer women and allies in tech: http://www.lesbiansintech.org
  • BBG Ventures (Built By Girls Ventures): backed by AOL, BBG invests in portfolio companies that have at least 1 female founder. They are based in NY. http://www.bbgventures.com
  • So Gal Ventures : The First female led millennial venture capital firm. http://www.sogalventures.com
  • Golden Seeds : Since 2005 this investment seed fund based in NY has evaluated over 3000 women-led companies, and has invested $80 million in more than 76 of them. http://www.goldenseeds.com
  • Female Founders Fund : An early stage fund investing in the exponential power of exceptional female talent: http://www.femalefoundersfund.com
  • Meetup : For NYC Alone there are multiple great groups where you’ll be bound to find leads for female founders — heres 3 you can start with:

  • Women Who Code (6,782 members) http://www.meetup.com/WomenWhoCodeNYC/
  •   Women in Tech, Entrepreneurship and Funding in NYC:  (3,912 members) http://www.meetup.com/Women-in-Tech-NYC/
  • Techfest Club , the monthly event for women in tech: (1,374 members) http://www.meetup.com/Techfest-Club/
  And last but not least..
   15. GOOGLE : Literally, if you hit a google search on “female startup founders” you’ll get over 16 million search results. http://www.google.com
Need SAAS women founders? It was also well publicized in the media last year that there is in fact no absence of female founders in NY working on SAAS startups, and Fortune also reported in general that Brooklyn is the city with the most Female Founders in the world.
So for the love of humanity…
Can we please finally put the notion that its hard to find leads on female founders to rest, once and for all?
There isn’t a problem or any difficulty in finding female founders. The only problem is outdated/assumptive thinking and complete lack of outreach in believing that there is.

Please stop saying it’s hard to find female founders. Please. Just. Stop

Please stop saying it’s hard to find female founders. Please. Just. Stop
*There are many other resources/leads I could have included in this post. If you have any that you’d like to add, please share in a comment, and thanks for reading!
